The Journey.
August 2007.
After spending the day helping my daughter move into her dorm as her freshman year at the Art Institute was about to begin I took my daughter and her friend Stephanie out for a bite to eat. When lunch consists of 3 creative's undoubtedly the conversation will turn to art. Both of these young ladies are going to school for art and we began to discuss what projects we were working on. When it came to be my turn I started sharing a vision I had for a piece of art that had tattoo's as the focal point and how i found this great model for to project, I was looking for a classic look and feel and I wanted to call it 15 Minutes of Fame. Stephanie started talking about a real good friend of hers, his name was Alex. She began to tell how unique his look wa, she undoubtedly had my attention. I had to have a look for myself so I had my daughter email me his myspace page and before the page finished loading I knew he had the look that could carry this project.
March 2008
Going into this rendering I do not want to recreate Another 15 Minutes of Fame but I would like to be able to hang this piece along side it as a possible series. I'd like my approach to this piece to be more urban, I'd like some worn out city textures to be the backdrop on this drawing and I have a lot more feeling about what I'd like to do but it's hard to have a clear vision without actually meeting my subject.
Meeting Alex.
April 2008
There's nothing like meeting new people, I love it, and to be totally honest I wouldn't be able to even consider this drawing without sitting down with Alex before the photo shoot. I had a wonderful conversation with Alex and his girlfriend Heather prior to and felt a really great understanding about where he is in his life and a little of his hopes and dreams too. Alex has a wonderful art talent and we had a great discussion about what motivates us as creative's and how life can really be a road block in that process I have gone 10 years without picking up a pencil simply because there was no time. What really impressed me was his real sense of family and how connected he is to his. I think we both walked away from that conversation really stoked for the photo shoot.
The Shoot.
One of my favorite parts of the drawing process is the photo shoot. It's the ultimate in creativity. You go into it having so many preconceived ideas and almost always walk away with something totally different and amazing. This shoot was no different, the weather was cold and a misty rain was bothering us all day. I felt really bad for Alex who had to bare the weather to help us capture the moment we were after.
Once again I am siked to be working with a great photographer Justin Cross, Justin is the same photographer that captured the 15 Minutes of Fame photo and as usual, he really some great shots again today. Justin has an amazing eye for detail and really has an amazing ability to frame a shot to perfection. Below are a couple photo's from our shoot.

Back to my drawing table once again.... see you soon.
April, 2008
The process of picking a photo was very tough, I had so many great shots to choose from and I have 2 shots that I think I will end up drawing out of this series. I'm not sure they will be done consecutively as the second favorite I'd like to do as a 30x40" drawing.
The below pic is my choice, I feel this will be a great mate to My "15 Minutes of Fame" as well as stand on it's own as a great period art piece.
I think I will title this drawing, "Inhale"

With that said, Paper is on the table, reference pics are taped down. Let the journey begin...
